Happy New Year - Islamic year

Today is the first day of the commencement of an Islamic new year. The new year is being celebrated among the Muslim communities around the globe. Today is the first Muharram and the start of the first month of the Islamic calendar. I am blessed and thankful for being Muslim. Muharram has its own significance and meaning for Muslims. I appreciate and recognize the significance of the Islamic year for a variety of reasons such as the Islamic year is also called Hijri Year. The Islamic year is consists of 12 months and every month starts with the sighting of the moon. The month is about 29 or 30 days and depends on the moon. Some of the months are so important in the Islamic calendar such as

  • Muharram is genuinely significant for the Muslim community around the world more specifically Shia community
  • Rabi-ul-Awal is the 3rd month of the Islamic calendar and the Muslim community honoured and acknowledged this month due to the birth month of the last prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Seminars, lectures, conferences and Milad is  proposed in this month
  • Rajab is the 7th month of the Islamic calendar. This month is significant because it is near to Ramadan. Muslims focus on preparing for the Ramadan
  • Shaaban is the 8th month of the Islamic calendar and right before Ramadan. Muslims start fasting/Roza this month
  • Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar and is honoured with a variety of Islamic rituals such as Roza, traveeh, sehri, aftar and special azkar
  • Shawal is the 10th month of the Islamic calendar and the first of the Shawal is the Eid-ul-Fitar around the globe. Roza is not allowed on that day. My daughter was born on the 6th of Shawal
  • Zil-Hajj is the last month of the Islamic calendar. Hajj and the Eid-ul-Adha are significant occurrences. Muslims do travel around the globe and perform Hajj in Saudia Arabia and the rest of the Muslims celebrate Eid-ul-Adha
